California governor files emergency motion to stop Trump use of military in LA

California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken a bold stand against President Donald Trump, accusing the federal government of intentionally provoking rioters and turning the military against American citizens. In response to ongoing anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, Newsom, a Democrat, filed an emergency motion to stop Trump from further using the National Guard and Marines to quell the unrest.

The riots and looting in Los Angeles have escalated following a series of ICE operations in the city. Despite the chaos, Newsom argued that the federal government’s military response has been unnecessary and that the protests have been largely nonviolent.

Newsom, along with California Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta, filed a motion in federal court to request a temporary restraining order against Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Department of Defense. They aim to prevent the use of the military and federalized National Guard for patrolling communities or engaging in law enforcement activities, which they believe will escalate tensions and promote civil unrest.

The motion alleges that the federal government violated the U.S. Constitution and Title 10 authority by deploying military forces without the consent or input of the governor, as required by federal law. Newsom’s office blamed ICE agents for provoking the riots and criticized their operations for not notifying local law enforcement, leading to community backlash.

In response to the riots, Trump deployed thousands of National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to restore order in Los Angeles. However, Newsom and other California Democrats have strongly opposed this move, arguing that the protests did not warrant federal intervention and that local law enforcement could handle the situation.

Newsom accused Trump of behaving like a tyrant and turning the military against American citizens, calling it unprecedented and a threat to democracy. The governor has sued the Trump administration for deploying the military without his permission, while the California attorney general accused the president of seeking to intimidate dissenting voices.

Trump defended his actions, stating that he had urged Newsom to do a better job in handling the riots. He described the rioters as “animals” and claimed they were paid agitators rather than genuine protesters. Trump emphasized that the deployment of military forces was necessary to prevent further violence and chaos in Los Angeles.

As the legal battle between Newsom and Trump continues, the situation in Los Angeles remains tense. The clash between state and federal authorities highlights the complexities of maintaining law and order during times of civil unrest.
