Can the G7 leaders still find anything to agree about?

Fifty years ago this fall, in a castle outside Paris, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States came together for a three-day meeting. At the conclusion of their gathering, they issued the Declaration of Rambouillet, a 15-point statement of principles and commitments.

The Group of Six, as they were known, emphasized their shared beliefs and responsibilities as leaders of open, democratic societies dedicated to individual liberty and social advancement. They pledged to strengthen international cooperation, restore growth in world trade, and promote stability in the global economy.

In June 1976, Canada joined the group, forming the G7. The leaders met in Puerto Rico and emphasized the need for common economic strategies and cooperation to address global challenges.

Fast forward to 2024, the leaders gathered in Italy and released a detailed joint communique covering a wide range of global issues. However, as the 50th meeting of the G7 approached in 2025, it became increasingly unclear how much consensus the leaders could reach.

The memory of the 2018 summit in Charlevoix, Canada, where President Donald Trump renounced the communique, loomed over the current meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta. The disagreements over the wording of the communique at Charlevoix influenced the more concise declaration at the 2019 summit in Biarritz.

The ongoing trade war between some member countries added to the tensions at the current summit. The goal for the leaders, under the leadership of Mark Carney, was to avoid another blow-up and focus on narrower priorities such as countering foreign interference, wildfire responses, critical mineral supply chains, and artificial intelligence.

Despite the challenges and internal strains within the G7, there is still value in the leaders coming together to discuss global issues. The group may need to focus on areas of common ground and shared priorities to maintain its relevance in a rapidly changing world.
