Canada bans additional assault-style weapons, suggests donating to Ukraine

Canada announced on Thursday a ban on 324 assault-style firearms as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen gun control measures. The country’s leaders also revealed plans to work with the government of Ukraine to donate the banned guns to support the fight against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Defense Minister Bill Blair emphasized the importance of providing assistance to Ukraine, stating that every bit of support brings them closer to victory. The ban, announced by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, includes not only the prohibition of certain firearms but also investments in border security to prevent smuggling and trafficking. Additionally, the government aims to enhance firearms controls and impose stricter penalties on gun traffickers.
The restrictions will be enforced immediately, ensuring that the banned firearms are no longer in use. This move follows a previous ban in May 2020, which targeted 1,500 makes and models of firearms. Last month, the list expanded to over 2,000 models as new firearms were identified.
Minister LeBlanc stressed that firearms designed for the battlefield have no place in Canadian communities, citing past atrocities committed using such weapons. The government’s actions aim to prevent future tragedies and enhance public safety.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Public Safety Canada for further comment on the ban and its implications. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
As Canada continues to tighten gun control measures, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. Collaborating with Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression underscores Canada’s dedication to global peace and security. The ban on assault-style firearms represents a significant step towards a safer and more secure society.
