Canada Election: Ex-prime minister Stephen Harper to introduce Poilievre at Alberta rally

Conservatives have a strong history of winning in Alberta, but the upcoming election presents some interesting battleground ridings to keep an eye on. As a senior writer at CBC Edmonton, I have been closely following the developments in the region.

In the Edmonton area, two new ridings have emerged – Edmonton Gateway and Edmonton Southeast. These ridings were created from the old Edmonton Mill Woods riding, previously represented by Tim Uppal. Uppal is now running in Edmonton Gateway, while Edmonton Southeast sees a showdown between Conservative Jagsharan Singh Mahal and former Liberal cabinet minister and current Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.

Another riding to watch is Edmonton Centre, which has seen a back-and-forth between Liberals and Conservatives in past elections. This time around, Liberal incumbent Randy Boissonnault is not seeking re-election, leaving the field wide open for a new candidate to take the seat.

Many Albertans view this election as high-stakes, with pollster Janet Brown predicting a high voter turnout due to the current political climate. Concerns about leadership in standing up to challenges like dealing with Trump, as well as issues surrounding pipelines and the economy, are at the forefront of voters’ minds in Edmonton.

The political landscape in Alberta is certainly shifting, and it will be interesting to see how these key ridings play out in the upcoming election. Stay tuned for more updates on the race as we get closer to election day.
