Canada election: Ottawa slams brakes on report Honda could shift production to U.S. in response to tariffs

Hockey and politics collide for French debate
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves François-Blanchet is facing a dilemma as the Montreal Canadiens have a crucial game that could secure them a playoff spot on the same evening as the French-language federal election debate. This situation brings back memories of 2011 when then Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe successfully rescheduled the French-language debate to avoid a conflict with a Canadiens-Bruins playoff game.
The upcoming French-language leaders’ debate is set for 8 p.m. ET tomorrow, coinciding with the Montreal Canadiens’ playoff aspirations.
Reflecting on the past, in 2011, Gilles Duceppe’s initiative to reschedule the debate to accommodate the playoff game was met with success. When asked about this today, current Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed surprise and mentioned his intention to discuss the possibility of rescheduling this year’s debate with the Leaders’ Debates Commission.
It is important to note that Duceppe’s request in 2011 was made well in advance and had the support of other parties, unlike the current situation. Additionally, the outcome of tonight’s game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers could potentially determine the importance of tomorrow’s Canadiens game.
On a lighter note, the Ottawa Senators also have a game scheduled for Thursday night, conflicting with the English-language debate. However, as they have already secured a playoff spot, there is less stress for their fans compared to the Canadiens supporters.
