The American Health Organization Pan says that Canada has the highest number of measles shops on the continent and that more action is needed to tackle low vaccination rates.

The regional agency within the World Health Organization, which covers North and South America, says that there has been an exponential increase in measles this year.

From 8 August, the 10,139 confirmed measles cases in ten countries, which represents a 33-fold increase compared to the same period in 2024, when there were 311 cases.

Canada leads the peloton with 4,548 measles cases, especially in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.

PAHO says that low vaccination rates are in the first place, whereby us and Mexico also see great outbreaks in the past year.

The Health Agency says that countries must strengthen routine immunization and perform targeted vaccination campaigns in risky communities.

Vacc coverage percentages in the region are 79 percent for the two required doses, which are lower than the 95 percent recommended to prevent outbreaks.

The data of the group shows that 18 people died as a result of the outbreak: 14 in Mexico, three in the United States and a newborn in Canada.

PAHO says that outbreaks have been identified in particular in Mennonite communities, but adds recent data, suggests an increasing number of cases outside these groups.

In Mexico, PAHO says that a massive vaccination campaign is underway in Chihuahua, where most of the 3,911 infections have taken place.

“Indigenous communities are most affected, with a case-fatity rate 20 times higher than in the general population,” says the report.

The US has reported outbreaks in 41 jurisdictions, with a total of 1,356 cases.

“It is important to note that these figures are dynamic and can change as countries continue to update their case counts,” said spokesman Sebastian Oiliel in an e-mail.
