Canada organizing flights in neighbouring countries for Canadians fleeing Israel, Iran

The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has prompted the Canadian government to step in and assist Canadians in the region. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced plans to organize commercial flights out of neighbouring countries to ensure the safety of Canadians caught in the crossfire.

In an interview with CBC’s Power & Politics, Anand urged Canadians in both Israel and Iran to head to Jordan, Turkey, and Armenia, where Canada is increasing its consular services. She emphasized the importance of exercising maximum restraint and stated that flights would be available “right away.” Canada is also exploring further options with its allies to facilitate the evacuation process.

Commercial airspace over both Israel and Iran has been closed due to the ongoing attacks, making it challenging for Canadians to leave the region. Anand encouraged Canadians to register with Global Affairs Canada for consular services and assistance. She mentioned that thousands of Canadians are still in Israel and Iran, with more reaching out to the government for help every day.

Despite having an embassy in Israel, Canada has had no diplomatic ties with Iran since 2012. Canadians fleeing Iran have multiple border crossing options in Turkey and Armenia, while those in Israel can cross into Jordan. The government previously organized evacuation flights out of Lebanon and Israel in response to military actions in the region.

Diaspora communities in Canada have expressed concern for their family members in the conflict zone as tensions continue to rise. The situation escalated when Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran’s military and nuclear sites, leading to a deadly exchange of missile fire between the two countries.

As the conflict intensifies, U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at potential American involvement, raising concerns about further escalation. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons in Iran and maintain stability in the region.

The Canadian government is working diligently to ensure the safe evacuation of Canadians from the conflict zone and is coordinating with international partners to provide necessary support. The priority is the safety and well-being of Canadians caught in the midst of the Israel-Iran conflict.
