Canada races to revive Commonwealth ties with its U.S. relationship on shaky ground
The Canada-U.S. relationship is currently facing its lowest point in over a century, with President Donald Trump threatening to damage the Canadian economy and undermine the country’s sovereignty on a near-daily basis. As a result, Canada is looking to strengthen ties with like-minded countries, particularly historic allies such as Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
Proponents of a potential “CANZUK” alliance argue that Canada should seize the opportunity to enhance trade links, integrate militaries for mutual defense, and pursue mobility rights to allow citizens to move freely between the four countries. With a combined GDP of approximately $6.5 trillion and the world’s third-largest military force, a CANZUK partnership could provide a strong foundation for weathering the political upheaval caused by Trump’s actions.
James Skinner, the CEO of CANZUK International, emphasized the importance of exploring new avenues with Canada’s closest allies abroad. He highlighted the shared history, language, and familial ties between the four countries as compelling reasons to pursue closer cooperation. Skinner noted that Canada must avoid being overly dependent on the United States and should actively seek out alternative partnerships.
Former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole expressed his support for a CANZUK alliance, calling for freer trade, enhanced security ties, and the free movement of people among the four nations. He emphasized the need for other democratic countries to step up and fill the void left by the U.S.’s retrenchment.
While tensions have existed among the CANZUK countries in the past, recent efforts to strengthen relations have been evident. Canada’s leaders have embarked on trade missions to Australia, engaged in discussions with the U.K. on economic security, and expressed a commitment to advancing bilateral trade. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly highlighted the importance of forging closer ties with the U.K., especially in light of recent geopolitical developments.
Despite potential challenges and competing interests, there is a growing consensus among politicians and policymakers that a CANZUK alliance could provide numerous benefits for Canada. Mark Carney, a Liberal leadership hopeful, emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with the U.K. and other Commonwealth countries. Other political figures, such as Frank Baylis and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, have also voiced support for greater cooperation with like-minded allies.
As Canada looks to diversify its trading partnerships and reduce its reliance on the U.S., a CANZUK alliance could offer a promising path forward. By leveraging shared values, historical connections, and economic synergies, Canada and its Commonwealth partners may find new opportunities for collaboration and mutual prosperity in an increasingly uncertain world.
