Canada trails Hungary 2-0 after singles losses in Davis Cup qualifier in Montreal

Canada is facing an uphill battle in the Davis Cup men’s team tennis tournament as they must overcome a 2-0 deficit against Hungary to advance in the first-round qualifier. Hungary took a commanding lead on Saturday at Montreal’s IGA Stadium, with Fabian Marozsan defeating Alexis Galarneau and Marton Fucsovics toppling Gabriel Diallo.

In the opening match, Marozsan prevailed over Galarneau with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Despite Diallo winning the first set in his match against Fucsovics, the Hungarian player came back strong to secure a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., and Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., are set to play Marozsan and Mate Valkusz in a must-win doubles match on Sunday. If necessary, Diallo will face Marozsan in a fourth matchup, while Galarneau will battle Fucsovics in a fifth match.

The winner of the tie will advance to the second round of qualifiers in September, while the losing team will be relegated to the World Group 1 level. Canada, who has lost in the quarterfinals in the last two years, has a strong record at home, winning nine of its last 10 ties.

Fans can catch all the action of the tie through live streaming on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem. For the full streaming schedule, visit the official website.

With Canada’s hopes hanging in the balance, the team will need to rally and put forth their best effort to turn the tide against Hungary and secure a spot in the next round of the Davis Cup.
