Canada wins gold, bronze to end World Relays and clinches another spot at athletics worlds

Canada’s mixed team of 100-metre sprinters has proven their prowess on the international stage, claiming victory at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China. The quartet of Sade McCreath, Marie-Eloise Leclair, Duan Asemota, and Eliezer Adjibi clocked in a season-best time of 40.30 seconds, outpacing Jamaica and Great Britain in the final.

Despite their impressive performance, the mixed team will not be joining the men’s and women’s counterparts at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September. The event will not be contested at the championships, leaving the Canadian sprinters unable to compete on the world stage.

The Canadian men’s 4×100-metre relay team, the reigning Olympic champions, also showcased their talent in Guangzhou. While facing a setback with a less-than-perfect exchange between Aaron Brown and Jerome Blake, the team managed to secure a bronze medal behind South Africa and the United States. Their time of 38.11 was a far cry from their Olympic gold-winning performance of 37.50 but still a commendable effort.

On the women’s side, the Canadian 4×100 team set a national record with a time of 42.46, finishing fifth in the final. The quartet of Jacqueline Madogo, Audrey Leduc, Sade McCreath, and Marie-Éloïse Leclair showed great determination and skill in their race, earning a spot at the upcoming world championships.

In the mixed 4×400-metre relay event, Canada’s team of Austin Cole, Lauren Gale, Nathan George, and Zoe Sherar secured a spot at the world championships with a third-place finish in their heat. Their time of 3:12.95 was a significant improvement from their previous performance and demonstrated their potential on the global stage.

Overall, Canada’s sprinters have proven their mettle at the World Athletics Relays, showcasing their talent and determination. While they may not be competing at the upcoming World Athletics Championships, their success in Guangzhou is a testament to their skill and dedication to the sport.
