Canada world juniors: Selection camp opens

Canada is gearing up for another shot at a home-soil gold medal at the world junior hockey championship, with a renewed focus on skill, speed, and competitiveness. Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s senior vice-president of high performance, emphasized the need for a strong Canadian identity in this year’s team, following last year’s disappointing fifth-place finish.

The selection camp kicked off in Ottawa with a group of 33 hopefuls hitting the ice for the first time. Despite inclement weather affecting attendance, the team is determined to make the most of their time together before the tournament begins on December 26.

One player who has already secured a spot on the final roster is Bradly Nadeau, a talented forward from New Brunswick who has been making waves in the AHL. His inclusion adds depth to a competitive lineup that is vying for a chance to represent Canada on the world stage.

While some NHL prospects may not be available due to commitments with their pro teams, Canada is keeping its options open with a roster that can carry up to 25 players. This flexibility allows the coaching staff to make informed decisions based on performance throughout the selection camp.

With seven returning players from last year’s squad, including standout prospects like Easton Cowan and Brayden Yager, the team is looking to build on past experiences and make a strong push for gold. Young talents like Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer are also turning heads with their impressive skills and potential to be top picks in the NHL draft.

As the team prepares for training camp in Petawawa, Ontario, there is a renewed sense of determination and focus among the players and coaching staff. Following last year’s disappointment, there is a clear emphasis on executing the game plan and playing with a sense of urgency in all areas of the ice.
