Canada’s fate uncertain entering final day of wheelchair curling worlds round robin

Canada splits games at World Wheelchair Curling Championship

Canada had a mixed day on Wednesday at the world wheelchair curling championship, winning one game and losing another, leaving them in a precarious position heading into the final day of round-robin competition in Stevenston, Scotland.

In the morning draw, the Canadian rink skipped by Gil Dash of Wolseley, Sask., secured a 6-3 victory against Slovakia. The win was fueled by a crucial steal of two points in the sixth end, propelling Canada to success.

However, Canada missed an opportunity to bolster their playoff chances with a heartbreaking 5-4 extra-end loss to Sweden in the late draw. The defeat has put Canada in a tie for third place with Norway, Scotland, and Sweden, all with a record of 5-4, with three draws left to play. The top six teams will advance to the playoffs.

At the top of the standings are China and South Korea, both sitting comfortably at 7-2 and already securing their spots in the playoffs. England and Italy are at 4-5, while Japan, Latvia, Slovakia, and the United States are at 3-6.

Canada’s next challenge will be facing off against China in Thursday’s afternoon draw, followed by a crucial match against Italy to wrap up the preliminary-round play.
