Canada’s Gabriel Diallo picks up another win on grass as Wimbledon draws near

Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo Continues Winning Streak on Grass
Canadian tennis players are gearing up for Wimbledon, and Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo is making headlines with another impressive win on grass. The 23-year-old rising star secured a spot in the second round of the Mallorca Championships with a straight-sets victory over Spain’s Jaume Munar.
Diallo’s dominant performance saw him clinch the match with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3 in just under an hour. The six-foot-eight player showcased his powerful serve by firing 10 aces and displaying a strong defense by saving both break points he faced. Diallo also capitalized on his opportunities, breaking Munar three times out of four chances, including a crucial break in a four-game winning streak to seal the second set.
Having recently claimed his first ATP tournament title at the Libema Open in the Netherlands, Diallo entered the Mallorca Championships with a career-high world ranking of No. 41. His next challenge will be against Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the ATP 250 grass-court tournament.
On the women’s side, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand faced an early exit at the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open in Germany. Dabrowski, making a comeback after a month-long absence due to a rib injury, showed promise in the first set but ultimately fell short in a tough three-set battle against Wu Fang-Hsien and Jiang Xinyu.
Meanwhile, in men’s Wimbledon qualifying in London, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., advanced to the second round with a hard-fought victory over Murphy Cassone of the United States. Galarneau will now face British wild card Oliver Tarvet in his upcoming match. However, Liam Draxl from Newmarket, Ont., was unable to secure a qualifying spot after a close defeat to Serbian veteran Dusan Lajovic.
As women’s qualifying kicks off, Canadian players including Victoria Mboko, Rebecca Marino, Bianca Andreescu, Kayla Cross, and Carson Branstine are set to compete. Branstine, who hails from California but represents Canada internationally, faces an exciting opening match against Lois Boisson, a top-qualifying seed known for her impressive performance at the French Open.
The excitement continues to build as main-draw action at Wimbledon, the prestigious third Grand Slam of the tennis season, is set to begin on June 30 at the historic All England Club.
