Canada’s oldest Second World War veteran dies just shy of 110th birthday

Albert Middleton, believed to be Canada’s oldest living Second World War veteran, passed away just before his 110th birthday at Broadmead Care’s Veterans Memorial Lodge in Saanich, British Columbia on February 12. Born on March 11, 1915, in London, England, Middleton had a remarkable life filled with adventure, challenges, and resilience.
Middleton was sent to Canada as a teenager by the U.K.’s National Children’s Home and Orphanage. He worked at an apple orchard in Brantford, Ontario, to pay for his passage west and endured a harsh winter in Kapuskasing, Ontario, where he developed the “boarding house reach” – a survival skill to ensure he got his fair share of food.
During the Second World War, Middleton volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Europe from 1943 to 1946. He bought a 26-hectare hobby farm after the war, balancing his passion for farming with full-time work at factories in Ontario. Despite facing personal tragedies with the loss of two wives, Middleton raised three children and instilled in them a strong work ethic and appreciation for the sacrifices he made.
Middleton’s son, Wayne Middleton, reflected on his father’s tough upbringing and described him as a knowledgeable and resilient man who didn’t tolerate any nonsense. He emphasized the difference in their lives compared to his father’s, acknowledging the hardships Middleton endured to provide a better life for his family.
Throughout his long life, Middleton’s advice on longevity was simple yet profound – “Don’t give in.” His strong will and determination were evident in his ability to overcome challenges and live a fulfilling life well into his 100s.
As the oldest surviving member of Home Children Canada, Middleton’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations with his remarkable story of perseverance, courage, and unwavering spirit. His contributions to Canada’s history and his service during the Second World War will forever be remembered and honored. A celebration of life will be held at the Veterans Memorial Lodge to commemorate Middleton’s extraordinary life and legacy.
