Rebecca Marino of Canada has secured her spot in the main draw of the US Open after a hard-fought victory over Czech Republic’s Dominika Salkova. Marino triumphed with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the final round of qualification on Friday.
Marino showcased her resilience, converting four out of five break points and saving seven out of 11 chances against her opponent. The match lasted two hours and 13 minutes, with Marino displaying her determination and skill on the court.
The 34-year-old from Vancouver will join fellow Canadians Victoria Mboko and Leylah Fernandez in the Women’s Singles bracket at the prestigious tournament.
Mboko, the 19-year-old rising star, recently claimed the title at the National Bank Open in Montreal and is currently the highest-ranked Canadian at 22nd in the WTA rankings. She faces a tough challenge in the opening round against two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova.
Meanwhile, Fernandez, the 31st seed from Laval, Que., will begin her campaign against a qualifier as she aims to make her mark at the final Grand Slam of the season.
On the men’s side, Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime, seeded 25th, will also compete in a qualifying match. Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed from Richmond Hill, Ont., will face Marton Fucsovics from Hungary, while Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo, seeded 31st, takes on Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
