Canada’s Thompson wins World Cup ski cross gold; teammate Schmidt takes bronze
Canada’s Marielle Thompson returned to the top of the World Cup ski cross podium for the first time in over two years on Sunday in St. Moritz, Switzerland, while her teammate Hannah Schmidt took bronze for her third straight podium finish.
The Whistler, B.C., native Thompson had collected 13 combined silver and bronze medals since her last World Cup victory in Dec. of 2021 in Arosa, Switzerland.

Whistler, B.C.’s, Marielle Thompson won Sunday’s World Cup ski cross race and teammate Hannah Schmidt took the bronze medal in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
After winning both her quarterfinal and semifinal races earlier in the weekend, Thompson won the big final over silver-medallist Fanny Smith of Switzerland, countrymate Schmidt, and fourth-place Saskja Lack of Switzerland.
“It feels like a long time coming,” said Thompson in a post-race interview. “I haven’t won a race in quite some time, so I’m stoked.”

The 31-year-old’s most recent podium finish was a silver medal on home soil in Nakiska, Alta., on Saturday – a race that was won by Schmidt.
Ottawa’s Schmidt was coming off back-to-back wins in Nakiska on Saturday and Sunday, and her third-place finish marks her fifth podium finish of the World Cup season.
In the men’s competition, Reece Howden of Cultus Lake, B.C., narrowly missed the podium in the big final, finishing behind gold-medallist Simone Deromedis of Italy, silver-medallist Alex Fiva of Switzerland, and bronze-medallist Youri Duplessis Kergomard of France.
Despite the fourth-place finish, Howden sits in second in the World Cup standings with 331 points, trailing only teammate Jared Schmidt’s 353 points.
