Canada’s U19 women’s volleyball team defeats Dominican Republic to earn bronze at Pan Am Cup

Canada’s under-19 girls’ volleyball team made headlines over the weekend as they secured the bronze medal at the Pan American Cup in Kingston, Ontario. In a thrilling match against the Dominican Republic, Canada emerged victorious with a 3-2 win, clinching the tiebreaker 15-10 at Queen’s University Athletic and Recreation Centre.
The match was intense, with Canada leading in attack points 58-50 and blocking 10-4. However, the Dominican Republic had one more ace with a score of 11-10. Despite Canada making more errors with 35 compared to the Dominican Republic’s 24, they managed to maintain their composure and secure the win.
Sydney Bell and Sol Henson were the standout players for Canada, leading in points with 16 and 14 respectively. On the opposing side, Ambar Hernandez and Julie Millaray Arias were the top scorers for the Dominican Republic with 16 and 13 points.
Head coach Gina Schmidt expressed her pride in the team’s performance, noting the Dominican team’s tougher serving compared to their previous encounter. She commended her team’s ability to adapt and overcome challenges, especially in the crucial fifth set.
The Pan American Cup served as valuable preparation for the upcoming FIVB Girls’ U19 2025 World Championship, set to take place in Serbia and Croatia in early July.
