Canada’s Westlake comes out of Para hockey retirement, seeks 6th Paralympic Games

A veteran player with a storied history in Paralympic hockey is making a comeback in hopes of helping Canada secure another gold medal in Italy. Greg Westlake, a five-time Paralympian from Oakville, Ont., recently came out of retirement to rejoin the Canadian para hockey team.

After spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach, the 39-year-old decided to lace up his skates once again at a training camp in Calgary. Westlake expressed his love for the game and the camaraderie of the team, stating that it was difficult to step away when he did, but now felt like the right time to return to the ice.

Westlake was part of the Canadian team that clinched gold in Turin, Italy in 2006. Since then, he has experienced a fourth-place finish in Vancouver, a bronze in 2014, and two heartbreaking losses to the United States in the finals in 2018 and 2022.

Having become a parent to two children and transitioning into coaching, Westlake found himself drawn back to playing. His personal connection to the sport, coupled with the strong bond he shares with his teammates, motivated him to make a comeback.

As a double-leg amputee, Westlake has faced challenges throughout his career but has never let his disability define him. His resilience and determination have made him a respected figure both on and off the ice.

Now aiming for his sixth Paralympic Games in Milan and Cortina in March 2026, Westlake’s experience and leadership will be invaluable to the team. Current captain Tyler McGregor and goaltender Adam Kingsmill both praised Westlake’s mentorship and influence on the team.

The ultimate goal is the Paralympic Games in March, where Westlake hopes to add another gold medal to his collection and inspire his children with his athletic prowess.
