Canadian Actor Michael J. Fox Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

U.S. President Joe Biden recently awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the country, to Canadian actor Michael J. Fox and several other distinguished individuals. The White House announced the recipients, highlighting Fox’s remarkable achievements and contributions.

Michael J. Fox, a renowned actor who has won numerous awards, including five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award, was recognized for his outstanding work both on screen and off. He is best known for his role in the iconic Back to the Future movie franchise. In addition to his successful acting career, Fox is a passionate advocate for Parkinson’s disease research and development.

In 1991, at the age of 29, Fox publicly disclosed his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder. In response to his diagnosis, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, dedicated to advancing research and finding a cure for the disease.

Expressing his gratitude for the honour, Fox, now 63, stated on his foundation’s website, “Receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom is humbling, an honour I could never have anticipated. I’m grateful for this recognition, which I share with the patients, families, and researchers who have brought us closer than ever to ending Parkinson’s disease once and for all.”

Aside from Michael J. Fox, other notable individuals honoured by President Biden included José Andrés, a celebrity chef and founder of World Central Kitchen; Bono, the activist and lead singer of the Irish band U2; Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State and presidential candidate; Jane Goodall, a renowned conservationist; Denzel Washington, an Oscar-winning actor; and Anna Wintour, a fashion icon and editor of Vogue.

This prestigious award ceremony celebrates the remarkable achievements and contributions of individuals who have made a significant impact on society and the world at large. The recipients exemplify excellence in their respective fields and serve as inspiring role models for future generations.
