Canadian cyclist Derek Gee claims victory at O Gran Camino road race in Spain

Canadian cyclist Derek Gee emerged victorious at the O Gran Camino road race in Spain, securing a 35-second lead over Italy’s Davide Piganzoli. Representing the Israel-Premier Tech team, the 27-year-old from Ottawa showcased his prowess throughout the five-stage race, ultimately clinching his first overall stage race victory.

Gee’s journey to triumph began with a standout performance in the individual time trial, propelling him into the lead position on Friday. His lead extended to 37 seconds after a strong finish in the following stage on Saturday, solidifying his dominance in the competition.

Despite finishing 24th in the final stage, which was won by Denmark’s Magnus Cort, Gee’s consistent performance throughout the race secured his position at the top of the leaderboard. His teammate Hugo Houle, also representing Israel-Premier Tech, finished 41st overall.

Gee Acknowledges Team Effort

Gee humbly credited his teammates, including Hugo Houle, Daniel Lima, Marco Frigo, Pau Marti, Simon Clarke, and Jakob Fuglsang, for their instrumental role in his victory. He expressed gratitude for their support in controlling the race and navigating crucial moments, highlighting their exceptional teamwork.

The challenging finale of the race encompassed 165.3 kilometers, culminating in Santiago de Compostela after a demanding Category 3 climb and multiple gravel sections. Gee’s exceptional performance showcased his resilience and skill on diverse terrains.

With his recent success at the O Gran Camino road race, Gee continues to build on his impressive cycling career. Having previously excelled at prestigious events such as the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, he is set to lead the Israel-Premier Tech team at the upcoming Giro.
