The Battle for Canadian Title Wins Continues at Hypo Meeting Decathlon

As the Hypo Meeting decathlon in Götzis, Austria enters Day 2, Canadian athletes Damian Warner and Pierce LePage find themselves in a challenging position. Warner, the defending champion and eight-time Hypo Meeting winner, is currently in seventh place, while LePage, the 2023 champion who is returning from off-season back surgery, sits in 11th.

Warner accumulated 4424 points from five events on Saturday, placing him 228 points behind leader Ayden Owens Delerme of Puerto Rico. LePage, on the other hand, has a total of 4315 points heading into the second day of competition.

The Hypo Meeting is a prestigious multi-event competition that is considered a key indicator of a decathlete’s form leading up to major events like the world championships and the Olympics. With Warner and LePage representing Canada, all eyes are on their performance as they aim to continue the streak of Canadian success at the event.

Day 1 Recap

The first day of competition saw Warner and LePage compete in five events, starting with the 100-metre sprint. Warner impressed with the second-fastest time of 10.39 seconds, earning him 1001 points. LePage finished 19th in the event with a time of 10.70, securing 929 points.

In the long jump, Warner recorded a best jump of 7.51m for 937 points, while LePage managed a jump of 7.42m for 915 points. The shot put event saw LePage throw 15.26m for 806 points, while Warner’s best throw of 14.41m fetched him 753 points.

As the competition progressed to the high jump, LePage cleared 2.03m to earn 831 points, surpassing Warner’s mark of 2.00m and 803 points. The final event of the day, the 400m, saw Warner clocking 47.57 seconds, while LePage finished in 49.59 seconds. Warner secured 930 points in the event, while LePage earned 834 points.

With five events remaining on Day 2 – the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m – Warner and LePage have their work cut out for them as they aim to climb up the leaderboard and secure a podium finish.
