Canadian Navy sailor dies after boat capsizes in Halifax’s Bedford Basin

A tragic incident occurred on Friday night in Halifax’s Bedford Basin, resulting in the death of a sailor from the Royal Canadian Navy. The sailor lost their life during small-boat operations when a rigid-hull inflatable overturned and capsized at around 10 p.m.
The Maritime Forces released a statement confirming that two sailors were involved in the accident. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre Halifax promptly coordinated a rescue operation with Canadian Coast Guard ships. The sailors were rescued from the water and taken to Mill Cove jetty, where paramedics transferred them to the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Sadly, one of the sailors could not be resuscitated and passed away. The other sailor was treated and released from the hospital on the same night. The name of the deceased sailor has not been disclosed out of respect for their next of kin, according to Maj. Trevor Ackland’s statement.
Commodore Jacob French, the commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, expressed deep sadness over the loss of the sailor. He praised the sailor’s dedication and service to the country, vowing to remember and honor their contribution. French extended his condolences to the sailor’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
The Military Police are currently investigating the incident, and the navy declined to provide further details in an interview request.
The unfortunate event serves as a sobering reminder of the risks that sailors face during their duties. The Royal Canadian Navy and the entire military community mourn the loss of one of their own and stand in solidarity with the sailor’s loved ones.
