Canadian striker Jonathan David has officially announced his departure from Lille as his contract comes to an end this season. This news was not unexpected as rumors about his next club have been circulating for months.
In a heartfelt social media video, the 25-year-old from Ottawa bid farewell to Lille, the club he joined in August 2020 from Belgium’s KAA Gent. “I wanted you to hear it from me. After five years at the club, it’s time to say goodbye,” David expressed. “I spent five amazing years in Lille. I know it hasn’t been the easiest. But I hope that my goals and my celebrations have brought you guys some joy and happiness. And it’s been a long and fun ride.”
While David did not disclose his next destination, reports suggest that he is eyeing a move to the English Premier League. The Canadian international has been in exceptional form, scoring 109 goals in 231 games for Lille, with 25 goals in 48 appearances this season. He reached the impressive milestone of 100 goals for Lille in December, netting twice in a 3-1 victory over Brest in Ligue 1 action.
As David contemplates his next move, Canada eagerly awaits to see if he will join a club participating in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which coincides with the CONCACAF Gold Cup from June 14 to July 13. David, who is Canada’s leading men’s goal-scorer with 32 goals in 61 international appearances, has been a key figure in the national team’s recent success.
His crucial goal in Canada’s 2-1 victory over the United States secured third place in the CONCACAF Nations League, showcasing his ability to perform on the big stage. With his exceptional talent and goal-scoring prowess, Jonathan David is set to make a significant impact wherever he decides to continue his footballing journey.
