Canadian university teachers warned against travelling to the United States

The Canadian Association of University Teachers has issued a warning to academic staff at Canadian universities, advising them against non-essential travel to the United States. This updated travel advice comes in response to the current “political landscape” created by the Trump administration, as well as reports of Canadians facing difficulties when crossing the border.

The association specifically cautions academics who are from countries with tense diplomatic relations with the United States, or those who have expressed negative views about the Trump administration, to be particularly vigilant when attempting to cross the border. Additionally, individuals whose research may conflict with the current U.S. administration’s position, as well as those who identify as transgender, are advised to exercise caution.

Furthermore, the association recommends that academics carefully consider the information on their electronic devices when crossing the border and take steps to protect any sensitive data. This precaution is especially important given the recent increase in reports of foreigners, including Canadians, being sent to detention or processing centers for extended periods of time.

The Canadian government has also updated its travel advisory, warning residents about the possibility of facing scrutiny from U.S. border guards and the risk of detention if entry is denied. This heightened sense of caution has led to a significant decrease in crossings from Canada into the United States, with a 32% drop in travelers in March compared to the previous year.
