Canadiens GM Hughes doesn’t regret visiting prospect in Russia despite backlash

Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes recently made headlines when he visited prospect Ivan Demidov in Russia, despite facing backlash due to the country’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Hughes, along with scout Nick Bobrov and special adviser Vincent Lecavalier, flew to Russia in December to watch Demidov play for SKA Saint Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League.

In response to the criticism they received for the visit, Hughes maintained that the trip was solely for scouting purposes. Hall of Famer Dominik Hasek was among those who condemned the Canadiens for visiting Russia, citing the country’s support for the Russian leadership and its involvement in the war. However, Hughes defended the decision, pointing out that other NHL teams had also traveled to Russia for similar purposes.

The main objective of the visit was to see Demidov play in person, as he was the fifth overall draft pick for the Canadiens. Hughes explained that it was important to assess the player’s performance and communicate the team’s support for him, despite a recent decline in ice time in the KHL. The discussion with SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg was focused on Demidov’s development and areas for improvement, similar to conversations Hughes has with prospects from other leagues.

Despite the controversy surrounding the visit, Hughes emphasized the importance of personal evaluation when it comes to scouting potential players. The International Ice Hockey Federation has banned Russia and Belarus from events due to the ongoing war, and the Canadian government advises against travel to Russia. However, Hughes and the Canadiens remain focused on their commitment to player development and talent acquisition, regardless of external factors.

The NHL has also taken steps to distance itself from Russia, excluding the country from recent tournaments. Despite the challenges and criticism faced by the Canadiens, Hughes stands by his decision to visit Demidov in Russia, highlighting the team’s dedication to supporting and nurturing their prospects. In a competitive and ever-changing hockey landscape, the Canadiens are determined to stay focused on their goals and continue to seek out top talent, no matter the circumstances.
