Man handed one of longest sentences for child-pornography offences ever in N.S.

Robert List, a long-time family friend known as “Uncle” to many, was recently sentenced to one of the longest prison terms in Nova Scotia for child pornography-related offenses. List, 59, shattered the trust of the family by secretly taking thousands of sexually explicit and degrading photos of two young members.

The victims, one now an adult and the other barely a teen, bravely attended court in Dartmouth, N.S., as List received his sentence of eight years and nine months in prison. Judge Brad Sarson described the case as “absolutely horrendous,” acknowledging the deep impact it had on the victims and their family.

The younger victim came forward in 2023 at just 12 years old, leading to a subsequent statement from the second victim detailing years of abuse starting in 2006. A police raid on List’s home uncovered 18,000 pornographic photos of boys, some dating back three decades.

The sentence, a joint recommendation between the prosecutor and defense lawyer, is among the highest ever handed down in the province. The sheer quantity of images seized makes it one of the largest seizures of child sexual abuse material in Nova Scotia.

The betrayal felt by the victims and their family was palpable in court as statements were read detailing the devastation caused by List’s actions. One victim’s mother expressed immense guilt for not recognizing the signs sooner, while another family member described the impact as unimaginable.

Despite List’s attempt to take his own life twice since being charged, he pleaded guilty in June to several charges, expressing remorse for his actions driven by his “own selfish needs.” His lawyer noted that the offenses did not involve sexual touching, and none of the photos were distributed.

During the police investigation, it was discovered that List often required the victims to wear specific outfits for photo shoots, with props like guns and stage lighting used in the sessions. Seized items included firearms, boys’ clothing, and a large collection of child pornography images and videos.

While the victims continue their healing journey, List will spend his days reflecting on the harm he caused. The hope is that this case will serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and protection of children from predators like List.
