Cannabis linked to increased stroke and cardiovascular death risk

The potential risks associated with cannabis use have been a topic of concern as recent research has shed light on the negative health effects. A new meta-analysis conducted by French researchers and published in the journal Heart has brought to light the link between cannabis use and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
Analyzing data from over 400 million patients involved in 24 previous cross-sectional and cohort studies, the researchers identified a significant increase in the risk of major cardiovascular events among cannabis users. The analysis revealed a 29% higher likelihood of heart attack, a 20% higher risk of stroke, and twice the chances of cardiovascular death in those who use cannabis.
The risk was further elevated in individuals who used cannabis at least once a week, with the likelihood of cardiovascular death being twice as high in this group. Studies also found higher odds of acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, particularly among younger populations aged 15 to 22 and those who used cannabis more than once a week.
One study even compared the risk of heart attack associated with cannabis to other illicit drugs like cocaine and opioids, highlighting cannabis as a larger predictor of heart attack. Additionally, a UK Biobank study revealed that women have a significantly higher risk of cannabis-related cardiovascular mortality compared to men.
While medical marijuana can offer relief for various illnesses, overuse has been linked to potential health risks, especially for seniors. Regular use of cannabis can be dangerous if not monitored, as it can lead to increased anxiety, disorientation, and other adverse effects on health.
Despite the limitations acknowledged by the authors of the French review, including poor reporting of cannabis exposure and potential bias in some studies, the findings underscore the need to investigate cannabis use in patients presenting with serious cardiovascular disorders.
Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, emphasized the importance of monitoring cannabis use, particularly among seniors. He warned against the potential risks associated with regular cannabis use, such as increased anxiety, cognitive impairment, and potential impacts on heart and lung health.
In conclusion, the research highlights the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the potential health risks associated with cannabis use, especially in the context of cardiovascular events. Monitoring and regulating cannabis use, particularly among vulnerable populations, is crucial to mitigating these risks and promoting overall health and well-being.
