Cape Breton RCMP say impaired driving suspected in fatal hit and run

A Cape Breton man facing criminal charges after fatal hit and run on Trans-Canada Highway

A tragic incident occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway in Bras d’Or, N.S., on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a 40-year-old motorcyclist from Bras d’Or. The fatal hit and run involved a 42-year-old man from Sydney Mines, N.S., who was driving a sedan at the time of the collision.

According to the RCMP, the driver of the car fled the scene after striking the motorcyclist, who sustained life-threatening injuries and passed away in the hospital the following day. The authorities were able to locate the driver on Brady Drive in Groves Point, where he was found exhibiting signs of impairment.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol level was measured at 0.09, slightly over the legal limit for driving. As a result, criminal charges are expected to be laid in connection with the incident.

Following his arrest, the driver was taken to the North Sydney RCMP detachment for processing. He was later released and is scheduled to appear in Sydney provincial court at a later date to face the charges against him.

The RCMP’s Northeast Traffic Services are actively investigating the collision and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
