Captain ‘lost for words’ after witnessing a super pod of more than 2,000 dolphins
A breathtaking sight unfolded in Monterey Bay, California, as Captain Evan Brodsky and his colleagues found themselves surrounded by a super pod of more than 2,000 dolphins. The captain, who also works as a videographer for a private boat tour company, was left speechless by the incredible display of nature.
The super pod, a rare convergence of dolphins, included a majority of northern right whale dolphins, a species typically found in deeper waters. It was a sight to behold for Brodsky, who described the water as “boiling hot water” due to the sheer number of dolphins creating foam and bubbles all around them.
The captain and his team were initially following a smaller pod of Pacific white-sided dolphins when they were led to the larger gathering. The super pod consisted of hundreds of Pacific whites and an estimated 2,000 northern right whale dolphins, including mothers and their calves. The unique appearance of the northern right whale dolphins, with their jet black bodies and lack of dorsal fins, made the spectacle even more mesmerizing.
Brodsky and his colleagues made sure to give the dolphins space, staying about 100 meters away to avoid disturbing them. However, the playful creatures were drawn to the wake created by the boat and approached them closely, giving the onlookers an up-close experience with the majestic animals.
Northern right whale dolphins are known for their social nature and often interact with other dolphin species. While they typically inhabit deeper waters, the super pod sighting in Monterey Bay was a rare treat for onlookers. Marine biologist Colleen Talty explained that such gatherings could be for various reasons, including socializing, feeding, or protection from predators.
For Brodsky, this encounter was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that he will never forget. Having previously filmed a group of Risso dolphins in the bay, this was his second encounter with a super pod since joining the company in 2022. He expressed his awe and gratitude for witnessing such a magnificent display of marine life, emphasizing that each sighting is as exciting as the first.
The super pod of dolphins in Monterey Bay was a reminder of the beauty and diversity of marine life and served as a testament to the wonders of nature. As Brodsky reflected on the experience, he expressed his appreciation for being able to witness such a spectacular event and reiterated that moments like these never get old.
