Carney calls for ‘maximum pressure’ on Russia as Putin issues threat to allies
Canada and its allies are standing firm in their resolve to maintain “maximum pressure” on Moscow in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent threats. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of continuing to hold Russia accountable for its role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Carney highlighted Putin’s refusal to prioritize peace and reiterated that Russia’s aggression is the root cause of the violence and bloodshed in Ukraine. The prime minister emphasized that Putin would not be allowed to dictate the terms of any potential peace agreement.
In response to Putin’s threats against foreign troops in Ukraine, Carney emphasized the need for allied nations to unite in imposing new sanctions on Russia. He also stressed the importance of arming Ukrainian forces and providing support to Ukraine once hostilities cease. Plans for additional sanctions are currently underway among Ukraine’s allies.
Putin’s dismissal of the idea of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine post-conflict further underscores the need for continued pressure on Moscow. The Russian president warned that foreign troops in Ukraine would be considered “legitimate targets” by Russian forces, raising concerns about escalating tensions.
Carney’s commitment to providing direct military assistance to Ukraine post-ceasefire was reiterated following discussions with allies. French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 countries have pledged to deploy a “reassurance force” in Ukraine after a ceasefire or peace agreement is reached.
Canada’s earlier pledge of $2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, announced at the G7 summit, will support the purchase of drones, armored vehicles, and munitions. Carney’s visit to Kyiv in August underscored Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities and reconstruction efforts.
In addition to military aid, Canada has earmarked $31 million in humanitarian assistance for Ukraine’s reconstruction in the years ahead. The prime minister’s unwavering support for Ukraine reflects the shared commitment of allied nations to standing with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
