Carney disrupts his campaign for 2nd time to return to Ottawa ahead of Trump’s tariffs

Liberal Leader Mark Carney is once again putting his federal election campaign on hold to return to Ottawa ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s anticipated announcement of widespread tariffs on Wednesday. Carney spent Tuesday in Winnipeg, where he addressed the media on candidate Paul Chiang’s resignation and the looming tariffs.

During his visit, Carney met with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew and had a productive phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss increasing trade between Canada and Mexico. He later spoke at a Liberal rally before flying back to Ottawa. Interestingly, Carney’s wife, Diana Fox Carney, made her debut introduction at the rally, recalling how Carney had always been committed to serving in public office since their days in graduate school at the University of Oxford.

Carney expressed his concerns over Trump’s tariff threats, labeling them as “the most significant crisis of our lifetime.” He emphasized his commitment to protecting Canadian sovereignty and rejecting any attempts to weaken the country. Throughout his campaign, Carney has positioned himself as a skilled negotiator, drawing on his experience navigating past crises like the 2008 financial meltdown and Brexit.

In response to Trump’s proposed tariffs, Carney pledged to support workers affected by the trade war, vowing to use every dollar earned through retaliatory tariffs for their benefit. He dismissed the idea of the U.S. becoming the 11th Canadian province, stating that Canada’s resources are not up for grabs.

This isn’t the first time Carney has paused his campaign in response to Trump’s tariff threats. Last week, Trump announced plans to impose auto sector tariffs on April 2, a move that could have severe repercussions for Canadian jobs. Despite a positive phone call between Carney and Trump, the U.S. president remained firm on his tariff plans.

As Carney prepares to face Trump’s upcoming announcement, he remains steadfast in his commitment to stand up for Canadian workers and industries. The prime minister emphasized that Canada would retaliate if necessary to protect its interests and ensure a level playing field for Canadian producers.

The uncertainty surrounding Trump’s tariff announcement has put Carney and his team on high alert, ready to respond decisively to safeguard Canada’s economy and sovereignty. Stay tuned for updates as the situation unfolds.
