Carney doesn’t expect immediate tariff relief after ‘good conversation’ with Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney: Unlikely U.S. Tariffs Will Be Lifted Soon

Prime Minister Mark Carney recently revealed that he had a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, discussing a wide range of topics including trade. However, Carney indicated that it is unlikely that American tariffs, which have been causing economic challenges for key Canadian sectors, will be lifted in the immediate future.

The discussion took place on the same day that most of Canada’s counter-tariffs on U.S. goods were lifted as a goodwill gesture in hopes of persuading Trump to remove tariffs on industries like steel and aluminum. Carney described his conversation with Trump as positive and productive.

In addition to his talk with Trump, Carney mentioned that his new clerk of the Privy Council, Michael Sabia, is currently in Washington D.C. meeting with American officials. Despite these efforts, Carney cautioned against expecting immediate resolutions in strategic sectors affected by tariffs.

The news of Carney’s conversation with Trump came as a surprise, as the Prime Minister’s Office typically releases summaries of such discussions. The PMO emphasized the importance of ongoing communication between Carney and the president for the benefit of workers, businesses, and all Canadians.

The unresolved trade war and the upcoming review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement are looming challenges as Carney and his cabinet convene for two days of meetings ahead of the resumption of the House of Commons. The upcoming budget is also expected to be a focal point, as Carney’s government aims to balance the operating budget over the next three years while making significant investments in defense and infrastructure projects.

Despite criticism from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre regarding the removal of tariffs, Carney remains focused on navigating the complexities of international trade relations and ensuring economic stability for Canada. Stay tuned for more updates on these critical issues as they unfold.
