Carney pulls in $1.9M from 10 times more donors than Freeland
Liberal leadership contender Mark Carney is dominating the fundraising game in the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to recent Elections Canada filings. Carney has managed to secure an impressive $1.9 million in donations from 3,289 contributors, far surpassing his competitors.
In addition to his strong financial support, Carney is also leading the pack in terms of caucus endorsements, with 83 MPs backing his candidacy compared to Chrystia Freeland’s 26 supporters. This combination of financial backing and political support positions Carney as the front-runner in the quest for the next prime minister.
The latest financial data, covering donations from early January to February 9, underscores Carney’s commanding lead. Candidates are required to report all donations four weeks before the party’s leadership convention on March 9, providing transparency and accountability in the fundraising process.
Karina Gould, former government House leader, has also surpassed Freeland in fundraising, securing $236,075 from 659 contributors. Meanwhile, former Liberal MP Frank Baylis has raised $227,441 from 59 donors, indicating strong financial support from a smaller pool.
On the other hand, Ruby Dhalla, another former Liberal MP, trails behind with $144,880 in donations. While Dhalla’s number of contributors is not yet disclosed, her fundraising efforts are lagging compared to her competitors.
As the Liberal leadership race heats up, Carney’s substantial fundraising lead and widespread caucus support position him as the frontrunner to succeed Trudeau as the next prime minister. Stay tuned for the next financial data release just days before the leadership convention to see how the candidates continue to stack up against each other.
