Carney says Canadians ‘weren’t impressed’ by U.K.’s offer of second state visit to Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney recently expressed his disappointment in the decision of the United Kingdom to offer U.S. President Donald Trump a second state visit while he was making threats against Canadian sovereignty. In an interview with Sky News, Carney stated that Canadians were not impressed by this gesture, especially considering the circumstances at the time.

During his party leadership campaign, Carney made it clear that Canada is not for sale and that issues surrounding sovereignty were of utmost importance. He believed that the invitation extended to Trump by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer contradicted these messages. When asked about his opinion on the matter, Carney stated that it was ultimately up to the United Kingdom and Buckingham Palace to decide on such diplomatic matters.

Carney also mentioned that King Charles would be visiting Canada later in the month to deliver the speech from the throne on May 27, accompanied by Queen Camilla. This visit was seen as a historic honor that reflected the significance of the times. Gov. Gen. Mary Simon confirmed the royal visit, emphasizing the importance of the throne speech in outlining the government’s direction and goals.

In response to criticisms about the timing of King Charles’ visit, Carney explained that he had personally invited the King to visit Canada after being sworn in as prime minister. He emphasized that the visit was not coincidental, as it coincided with challenges to Canada’s sovereignty by the U.S. President. Despite the heightened tensions, Carney viewed the visit as a reaffirmation of Canadian sovereignty.

The decision to offer Trump a second state visit was made by Starmer during a visit to Washington in February. Trump, in response, expressed his gratitude and excitement at the prospect of visiting the “fantastic” country once again. However, Carney’s remarks underscored the concerns of many Canadians regarding the implications of such diplomatic gestures on their country’s sovereignty.

As Canada navigates these challenging times, the upcoming royal visit and throne speech are expected to serve as important symbols of unity and reaffirmation of Canadian values. Carney’s stance on these issues reflects the sentiments of many Canadians who prioritize their country’s sovereignty and independence in the face of external pressures.
