Carney to hold first news conference since election win

Prime Minister Mark Carney to Hold News Conference Friday Morning

Prime Minister Mark Carney will hold a news conference Friday morning, marking his first appearance in front of the media since the Liberals emerged victorious in Monday’s federal election.

Set to take place at 11 a.m. in Ottawa, Carney is expected to outline his government’s early priorities and lay out the roadmap for his administration’s agenda.

One of the key topics likely to be addressed during the news conference is the timing of Carney’s first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Throughout his campaign, Carney positioned himself as the best candidate to navigate Canada through potential trade disputes and annexationist threats from the United States.

Trump recently confirmed that Carney would be visiting the White House “within the next week or less,” although the Prime Minister’s Office has yet to confirm this timeline. Following a call between Carney and Trump earlier this week, the PMO stated that the two leaders had agreed to meet in person in the near future.

In the recent federal election, the Liberals secured 168 seats, falling just short of the 172 needed for a majority in Parliament. The Conservative Party secured 144 seats in the election.

Carney, who won a seat for the first time in the Ottawa riding of Nepean, has been actively engaging in meetings and calls this week, including discussions with foreign leaders. He is expected to unveil his cabinet before the scheduled resumption of Parliament in the week of May 26.
