Carney to meet premiers in Saskatchewan June 2 amid tensions with the West

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with the country’s premiers early next month in Saskatchewan, amidst growing frustrations with Ottawa from some western leaders. The meeting, scheduled for June 2 in Saskatoon, was confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office after Ontario Premier Doug Ford first mentioned it to reporters.

Ford described the meeting as an “olive branch” to the West and a step towards uniting the country. He emphasized the need for the government to show more support to Saskatchewan and Alberta, highlighting the perceived lack of attention from the previous administration.

Following Carney’s comeback win in the recent election, Alberta and Saskatchewan premiers have called for a reset in how Ottawa deals with the western provinces. Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan emphasized the importance of better engagement and consultation on legislation and policies affecting the provinces, particularly in areas like clean energy regulations and carbon pricing.

Meanwhile, in Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith has raised the issue of potential secession, proposing to lower the threshold for putting a referendum on the ballot in 2026. However, during a conference call with Carney and the other premiers, the topic of secession was not discussed.

Carney, who aims to position Canada as an energy “superpower” and expedite infrastructure projects, has pledged to work towards diversifying trade and building pipelines in all directions. However, the issue of secession is a non-starter for British Columbia Premier David Eby, who urged his counterparts in Alberta and Saskatchewan to push back against any separatist sentiments.

The upcoming meeting with the premiers comes on the heels of Carney’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, where he was commended for his restraint. Trade issues, both domestic and international, are expected to feature prominently in the discussions, with Carney committing to reducing interprovincial trade barriers by Canada Day.

As preparations continue for the meeting in Saskatoon, the focus remains on fostering unity and strengthening the Canadian economy through collaborative efforts between the federal government and the provinces. Carney’s initiative to address trade barriers and promote national projects reflects a commitment to building a resilient and prosperous Canada.
