Carney will ask Governor General to dissolve Parliament Sunday and call election, sources say

Prime Minister Mark Carney Set to Call Federal Election

Prime Minister Mark Carney is reportedly set to ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election this Sunday, according to Radio-Canada sources. This news comes just a week after Carney was sworn in as prime minister and appointed his cabinet.

The decision for Carney to call an election comes as MPs were scheduled to return after Parliament was prorogued on Jan. 6. The election campaign is expected to last between 36 and 50 days, with potential election days set for either April 28 or May 5.

Carney’s Liberal Party is currently leading in public opinion polls, with 37.7 per cent support compared to Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives at 37.4 per cent, according to CBC’s Poll Tracker. The Liberal voter base is more evenly spread across the country, giving them a potential advantage in the number of seats they could win over the concentrated support of the Conservatives in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The CBC Poll Tracker suggests that if an election were held now, the Liberals could secure 176 seats to the Conservatives’ 133.

Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming federal election campaign.
