Carney’s cabinet meets for the first time as it stares down a pile of problems

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s newly constituted cabinet met for the first time on Parliament Hill on Wednesday to tackle a range of challenges facing the government. The new ministry is facing three main challenges – a U.S. trade war impacting Canada’s economy, consumer affordability issues, and unrest in Western Canada over natural resource development.

To address the cost of living concerns, Carney directed Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne to draft legislation for a middle-class tax cut that could save two-income families up to $825 annually. This tax cut will be introduced after Parliament reconvenes later this month.

The government’s electric vehicle manufacturing strategy is in jeopardy after Honda announced it would halt investments in Canada. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly plans to speak with Honda to find solutions to support autoworkers. Western Canada’s discontent with how Ottawa treats provinces has also come to the forefront, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith advocating for a “reset” and potentially a referendum on Alberta sovereignty.

Former Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault questioned pipeline expansion, suggesting existing infrastructure should be maximized. This sparked criticism from Alberta politicians who argue for new pipelines to diversify markets and reduce reliance on foreign imports.

Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, a former board member of an oilsands company, plans to visit Western Canada soon to work with the industry. Carney has identified dealing with the American trade problem as a top priority, with Defence Minister David McGuinty leading the Canada-U.S. relations committee.

Transport and Internal Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland is focused on removing domestic trade barriers to boost GDP. The cabinet is committed to diversifying trade markets and addressing the decline in exports to the U.S. amidst the tariff standoff.
