Carney’s trip to Europe aims to encourage trade, defence and energy co-operation

Prime Minister Mark Carney is embarking on a crucial trip to eastern and central Europe, where economic and security ties will take centre stage. His itinerary includes visits to Germany, Poland, and Latvia, where he will engage with key business and political leaders, as well as Canadian troops stationed in the region.
In Germany, Carney is set to meet with Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin, with a focus on enhancing the existing partnership between the two countries. Discussions will also involve key German business leaders to further strengthen economic cooperation.
Upon his arrival in Poland, Canada is expected to solidify a bilateral strategic partnership with a specific emphasis on energy and security. Additionally, Carney will interact with Canadian military personnel deployed in the country.
In Latvia, the prime minister will observe the Canadian-led NATO brigade and hold talks with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa to bolster relations and cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, critical minerals, and defense.
Accompanying Carney on different segments of the trip will be Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson and Defence Minister David McGuinty, showcasing Canada’s commitment to fostering partnerships and alliances in the region.
The meetings with European allies come at a critical juncture, as efforts to broker a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine face challenges. Russia’s recent escalation of military actions has raised concerns, prompting Ukraine to seek concrete security guarantees from its allies before committing to any potential peace deal.
Canada, as a member of the coalition of the willing, is poised to play a significant role in providing security assurances. The specifics of Canada’s involvement are still evolving, with discussions ongoing among allied defense chiefs to determine the extent of support needed for Ukrainian forces.
In the midst of these developments, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte affirmed the collective commitment to ensuring robust security guarantees for Ukraine, underscoring the importance of deterring future aggression from Russia.
As Carney navigates diplomatic engagements and strategic partnerships during his tour of Europe, Canada’s role in promoting stability and security in the region remains paramount.
