Mexico agrees to deploy 10,000 troops to US border in exchange for tariff pause

Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for a one-month delay on President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on social media on Monday morning. This agreement came just 12 hours before the tariffs were set to take effect.

In their conversation, Trump and Sheinbaum discussed the need for Mexico to combat drug trafficking into the U.S., and for the U.S. to increase efforts to block the flow of firearms into Mexico. Additionally, officials from both countries have begun talks on broader trade and security issues.

President Trump confirmed the deal on Truth Social, describing his call with Sheinbaum as a “very friendly conversation.” He stated that Mexico will immediately deploy 10,000 soldiers to the border to specifically target the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the United States. The tariffs on Mexican imports have been paused for one month to allow for negotiations led by top U.S. officials.

This agreement follows Trump’s recent announcement of 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs on China. While Trump spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, they did not reach an agreement, and the tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on Tuesday.

In response to the tariffs, Trudeau encouraged Canadians to “buy Canada” and support products made domestically. Meanwhile, Trump discussed the possibility of cutting off aid to South Africa after its president signed a controversial land seizure measure.

The deal between the U.S. and Mexico marks a significant step towards addressing key issues affecting both countries. With negotiations underway and troops being deployed, the focus is now on finding a mutually beneficial agreement that enhances security and trade relations.
