CBU reverses stance, says it will proceed with online bachelor of education degree
Cape Breton University is pleased to announce that its unique eight-month online teaching degree will be starting in January as originally planned. The program was previously cancelled due to a delay in approval, but after working closely with the Nova Scotia government and the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, the university was able to ensure that the program meets all post-secondary education standards.
According to a news release from CBU, President David Dingwall expressed his gratitude for the collaborative efforts that went into overcoming the challenges that previously hindered the program. The university’s condensed Bachelor of Education degree was initially launched in 2024 as a pilot program and saw a successful graduation rate of over 90%, with many graduates already securing teaching positions.
Despite the setbacks, the condensed B.Ed. program has shown great promise and may continue into 2025, as stated by the higher education commission. This program is unique to CBU and is not offered anywhere else in the country. The university has assured students that there will be ample time to complete practical training within the eight-month schedule, thanks to the appointment of a coordinator by the provincial government to schedule practicum requirements with regional centres for education.
One student, Ibrahim Elayyan from Dartmouth, expressed his relief and excitement upon learning that the program was reinstated. He commended the university, the government, and the commission for coming together to rectify the situation and ensure that students like himself can pursue their teaching careers without further delays.
With the program back on track, Elayyan is eager to secure a teaching job and is optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead. He believes that the reconsideration of the program will open up doors for many aspiring educators, and he is grateful for the efforts made to make this possible.
As Cape Breton University prepares to kick off its condensed online B.Ed. program in January, students can look forward to a quality education that will equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their teaching careers. The collaborative efforts that led to the reinstatement of the program serve as a testament to the dedication and commitment of all parties involved in ensuring the success of the program.
