CFIB on the proposed tariff increase of Nova Scotia Power

A Company Interest Group Joins Opposition Against Proposed Rate Increase by Nova Scotia Power
A company interest group has joined the chorus of opposition against the proposed rate increase by Nova Scotia Power. Last week, Nova Scotia Power announced that it plans to raise rates for residential customers by 4.1 percent in each of the next two years.
While the proposed rate increase for companies is lower at 2.1 percent, Duncan Robertson of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business believes it will still have a significant impact. “It depends on the amount of power you consume, so a company, which typically consumes more than a household, will feel the effects of even a smaller percentage increase in terms of dollar value,” he explained.
Robertson noted that the recent criticism from the Prime Minister, who called Nova Scotia Power’s tariff increase “out of touch”, reflects the sentiments echoed by many companies in the region.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Taxpayer Federation has also voiced its opposition to the rate increase, arguing that the utility should focus on finding internal savings rather than passing on additional costs to Nova Scotians.
