Change comes to the Golden Globes, 2 years after an internal overhaul
The Golden Globes, historically known for being a superficial and disjointed affair, have undergone significant changes in recent years to address criticisms and improve their credibility. In 2023, a new owner took over and made the decision to exclude the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) from the voting process due to allegations of corruption and being out of touch with the industry.
The goal was to transform the Golden Globes into a more meaningful and international event, moving away from simply awarding the most famous individuals in the room. This shift was evident in the latest ceremony, which showcased a more diverse range of winners and nominees.
Kevin Fallon, editor of The Daily Beast’s Obsessed and co-president of the TV branch of the Critics Choice Association, noted that there is now a sense of weight and gravitas to the awards that was previously lacking. This was only the second Golden Globes since the disbandment of the HFPA, but it already showed signs of the positive impact of the behind-the-scenes changes.
One standout of the evening was the success of films like “The Brutalist” and “Emilia PĂ©rez,” which received recognition for their unique storytelling and diverse representation. The increased diversity among voters, with a significant increase in Black members, has led to a more inclusive selection of nominees and winners.
Rachel Ho, a Toronto film critic and Globe voter, highlighted the stricter regulations around gifts and relationships with publicists, ensuring that the voting process remains fair and unbiased. The changes have also led to a wider range of films being recognized, beyond the typical Hollywood fare.
While there were few Black winners at this year’s Golden Globes, the increased representation in nominations was a positive step forward. The event saw lesser-known films and performances triumphing over more mainstream choices, signaling a shift in the industry’s recognition of diverse and international talent.
Overall, the revamped Golden Globes have gained a newfound credibility and influence as a precursor to the Oscars. The winners and speeches at the ceremony now carry more weight and could potentially impact the outcome of future awards seasons. As the industry continues to evolve, the Golden Globes are striving to stay relevant and meaningful in celebrating the best in film and television.
