Charges dropped against 3 accused in Liam Payne’s death

A tragic incident occurred in Buenos Aires last October when former One Direction singer Liam Payne fell from a third-floor hotel balcony, resulting in his untimely death. The court in Argentina recently made a ruling regarding the criminal negligence charges against five individuals indicted in connection with the incident.

The ruling, obtained by The Associated Press, revealed that charges of criminal negligence were dropped against three key defendants: Rogelio Nores, an Argentine businessman with U.S. citizenship who was accompanying Payne during his trip; Gilda Martin, the manager of the CasaSur Hotel where the incident occurred; and Esteban Grassi, the hotel’s main receptionist. The charge of negligent homicide carries a sentence of one to five years in prison in Argentina.

However, the court ordered the other two defendants in the case to remain in custody. They are facing prosecution for allegedly supplying Payne with narcotics. A toxicology report revealed that Payne had alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system at the time of the incident.

Prosecutors argued that Nores had failed to fulfill his duty of care by leaving Payne alone while intoxicated. The defense countered that Nores had no legal, moral, or social obligation to care for Payne as he was outside the hotel when the incident occurred. Martin and Grassi, the two hotel employees, were in the lobby when they saw Payne severely intoxicated and decided to escort him to his room with the help of others.

The court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove how taking Payne to his hotel room constituted negligent conduct. The other two defendants, Ezequiel David Pereyra and Braian Paiz, remain in detention on charges of supplying narcotics to Payne, which carries a sentence of four to 15 years in prison.
