Charles Kushner confirmed as ambassador to France despite past legal troubles

New Jersey real estate developer Charles Kushner has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate for the ambassadorship to France and Monaco in a 51-45 vote. Kushner, who is the father-in-law of Ivanka Trump, was previously pardoned by President Donald Trump for federal tax evasion and Federal Election Commission violations dating back to 2005.

In 1985, Kushner founded the Kushner Companies and has been a prominent philanthropist, particularly supporting Jewish causes and institutions like Yeshiva University in Washington Heights, Manhattan. He has also made significant donations to St. Barnabas Hospital in Essex County, New Jersey, where a wing bears his family name.

During his confirmation hearing on May 1, Kushner acknowledged his past legal issues, stating that they have helped shape his judgment and prepared him for the ambassadorship. He emphasized that his mistakes have made him more qualified for the role.

At 71 years old, Kushner’s nomination in November was backed by Trump, who praised him as a “tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker.” Trump highlighted Kushner’s achievements, including being recognized as New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year and serving on various boards and councils.

Kushner’s son, Jared, who worked closely with Trump in the White House, was also mentioned in the congratulatory message. Trump expressed confidence that Kushner would strengthen America’s partnership with France, one of the country’s oldest allies.

The confirmation of Charles Kushner as ambassador to France and Monaco marks a new chapter in his career, leveraging his business acumen and philanthropic endeavors to represent the United States on the international stage. With a wealth of experience and a commitment to serving his country, Kushner is poised to make a meaningful impact in his new role.
