US Election 2024

Charles Kushner nominated as ambassador to France despite past legal troubles

New Jersey real estate developer Charles Kushner is set to be considered by the U.S. Senate on Monday for the ambassadorship to France and Monaco. Kushner, who is the father-in-law of Ivanka Trump, was previously pardoned by President Donald Trump for federal tax evasion and Federal Election Commission violations dating back to 2005.

In 1985, Kushner founded the Kushner Companies and has since been known for his philanthropy, particularly towards Jewish causes and institutions such as Yeshiva University in Washington Heights, Manhattan. He has also made significant donations to St. Barnabas Hospital in Essex County, New Jersey, with a wing bearing his family name.

During his confirmation hearing on May 1, Kushner openly acknowledged his past legal troubles, stating that they have helped shape his judgment and prepare him for the ambassadorship role. He believes that his mistakes have actually made him more qualified for the position.

President Trump nominated Kushner for the ambassadorship in November, praising him as a “tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker” who will effectively represent the country’s interests. Kushner, who recently celebrated his 71st birthday, has been recognized as the New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young and has served on various prestigious boards and councils.

Trump expressed his confidence in Kushner’s ability to strengthen America’s partnership with France, calling it “our oldest ally and one of our greatest.” Kushner’s son, Jared, also worked closely with the former President in the White House on various initiatives.

As Kushner’s nomination is being reviewed by the Senate, his background in business, philanthropy, and public service will be closely examined to determine his suitability for the ambassadorship. If confirmed, Kushner will have the opportunity to represent the United States in a key diplomatic role in Europe.
