China’s sci-fi spherical Death Star-like robot cop uses AI, facial recognition to track criminals

The streets of China were recently witness to a sight straight out of a science fiction novel – spherical drones patrolling alongside law enforcement officers. Logon Technology, a Chinese robotics company, introduced the RT-G autonomous spherical robot, touting it as a groundbreaking technological innovation designed to assist and potentially replace humans in dangerous environments.
These spherical robots are versatile, capable of operating on both land and water. They boast impressive capabilities, reaching speeds of up to 35km/h (approximately 22 mph) and enduring impact damage of up to 8,818 pounds (4 tons), according to the company.
In a video posted by TikTok user @di.q60, a large spherical robocop was seen patrolling Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, accompanied by four officers. Hangzhou, with a population of nearly 12 million, witnessed the intimidating presence of this robotic patrol.
Equipped with advanced AI technology, the RT-G robots are designed to assist law enforcement in identifying and immobilizing criminals, utilizing facial recognition technology. This marks a significant advancement in blending technology with traditional policing methods to enhance public safety.
China’s use of robots for law enforcement echoes similar initiatives in the United States. In April 2023, New York Mayor Eric Adams unveiled robotic dogs for the NYPD to assist in investigating high-risk or hazardous incidents. The integration of robots into policing operations underscores a global trend towards leveraging technology for public safety.
The introduction of autonomous spherical robots in China and robotic dogs in the U.S. showcases a growing reliance on innovative technologies to complement traditional law enforcement practices. As countries seek to enhance public safety through technological advancements, it is crucial to ensure transparency and collaboration with the communities they serve.
