Colombia’s Petro claims Trump admin revoked his visa

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has revealed that the Trump administration has revoked his travel visa to the United States this week. Petro made this announcement during a cabinet meeting when asked about his attendance at upcoming meetings with international organizations in Washington, D.C. later this year.
“I can no longer go because I believe they took away my visa,” Petro told reporters. “I didn’t need to have one, but anyway, I’ve already seen Donald Duck several times, so I’ll go see other things,” he added.
The State Department has declined to comment on the matter due to the confidentiality of visa records. Petro’s claim comes after he initially resisted accepting deportation flights from the U.S. military but later relented to Trump’s demands.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Colombia in late March and met with Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia. The two officials announced a data-sharing agreement aimed at identifying illegal immigrants and disrupting criminal activities in the region.
“We’re going to strengthen our regional security systems and make sure that we’re disrupting the movement of threatening actors that perpetuate illegal activity and facilitate illegal trafficking of migrants across the Western Hemisphere,” Noem said.
The expansion of biometric data sharing is expected to enhance efficiency and accuracy in law enforcement efforts and foster greater cooperation between the two countries.
President Donald Trump had previously threatened Colombia with massive tariffs before Petro backed down from his initial stance. The relationship between the two nations has been complex, with issues ranging from deportation flights to trade disputes.
In conclusion, the revocation of Petro’s travel visa adds another layer of complexity to the relationship between Colombia and the United States. The data-sharing agreement announced by Noem and Sarabia signifies a step towards enhanced cooperation in addressing security challenges in the region.
