Coloraof Gov. Polis pokes fun at Trump with April Fools’ Day post

Colorado Governor Jared Polis took a lighthearted approach to April Fools’ Day by poking fun at President Donald Trump in a playful social media post. The post seemed to be a response to Trump’s recent controversy over his official portrait at the state Capitol, which was ultimately removed.
In his post, Governor Polis humorously mentioned the importance of having a flattering portrait, sharing an animated image of himself as a character from the popular show “South Park.” Polis, a Democrat, emphasized his support for Colorado art and described the portrait as an opportunity to showcase his image in the state’s history.
The animated image of Polis from “South Park” was a clever nod to the show, which is set in Colorado. This playful gesture was in stark contrast to Trump’s recent demand for his portrait to be taken down from the Colorado state Capitol. Trump had criticized the painting and its artist, claiming that it was purposefully distorted to an extreme level.
Last week, at the request of Republican leaders in the state Legislature, the oil painting of Trump, created by artist Sarah Boardman during his first term, was removed from the Capitol. Despite Trump’s comments about Governor Polis, it’s important to note that Polis was not in office when the portrait was commissioned in 2019.
In a separate social media post earlier in March, Polis shared an image of himself in “South Park” alongside the characters Terrance and Philip, highlighting Colorado’s relationship with Canada. The post emphasized the benefits of the state’s connection with Canada, including job opportunities, trade partnerships, and even references to fictional characters from the show.
Governor Polis’ light-hearted and creative approach to addressing the controversy surrounding Trump’s portrait exemplifies his unique style of leadership. By using humor and pop culture references, Polis effectively engaged with the public while showcasing his support for Colorado art and history.
