Columbia University graduation disrupted as students heckle acting president

A shocking incident unfolded at Columbia University’s graduation ceremony in New York City on Tuesday morning, as students interrupted Acting University President Claire Shipman’s speech by heckling her and shouting, “Free Mahmoud!” Shipman, who was met with boos and continuous interruptions, attempted to deliver her message to the Columbia College Class Day ceremony attendees.

Shipman began her speech by acknowledging the resilience and adaptability of the graduating class, stating that they have faced more trials and hardships than they deserved. However, the crowd continued to heckle her, making it difficult for Shipman to deliver her message. Despite the disruptions, Shipman emphasized the deep friendships and relationships that the students have formed during their time at Columbia.

As Shipman tried to convey the importance of defining and shaping the values of the current generation, she was once again interrupted by chants of “Free Mahmoud,” referring to Mahmoud Khalil, the accused ringleader of pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia. Shipman remained composed in the face of the disruptions, eventually managing to finish her speech by highlighting the need to rebuild trust and create common ground in these challenging times.

This incident comes on the heels of a recent protest at Columbia’s library, where over 100 anti-Israel agitators stormed the building, resulting in numerous arrests and injuries to university officers. Shipman had previously condemned the occupation of the library, describing it as “utterly unacceptable.” The protesters demanded the university divest from Israel and showed support for Khalil.

Despite the disruptions at the graduation ceremony, Shipman reiterated that violence and vandalism have no place on the Columbia campus and that such behavior will not be tolerated. The incident also follows the controversial graduation of Columbia student Mohsen Mahdawi, who has been investigated for disturbing and antisemitic comments in the past.

As the Columbia community grapples with these events, it is clear that tensions are running high on campus. Shipman’s resilience in the face of disruptions and her commitment to upholding the university’s values serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment for all members of the community.
